Long ago in a neighborhood far, far away, a twenty-something city girl bought a country music album. The girl bought it because she liked the beautiful voice of the singer. She fell in love with it because of a dazzling performance by the fiddle player. The album was Emmy Lou Harris’ Roses in the Snow. The fiddler was a young musician from Kentucky and his name is Ricky Skaggs.

Known these days for his spectacular picking on banjo, mandolin and guitar, Ricky Skaggs can actually play just about anything and make it sound like music from the Gods. He’s a true musical prodigy and has spent his life singing and playing the most intricate, demanding, magnificent, Appalachian bluegrass it is possible to produce.

“Whoa!” you say. “A lot is possible.” Yeah, possible but not likely. It’s been a long time since 1980 and I’ve heard a lot of bluegrass since then. I’ve never heard anyone play better than Ricky Skaggs. End of story.

Bluegrass can be a bit of an acquired taste. Apparently springing from the coal pits and ash heaps of Kentucky and Tennessee, it’s really a homegrown adaptation of ancient Celtic music that reached our shores during the Irish and Scottish diasporas. What old fans and newcomers alike will tell you is that the best bluegrass is like the best nouvelle cuisine meal you’ve ever eaten: a feast of brilliant, spontaneous riffs grounded in the finest of old world traditions. Talent is the key.

And is Skaggs ever talented! He played the Grand Ole Opry at the tender age of seven. He brought down the house. His first paycheck was signed by the legendary musical duo, Flatt and Scruggs. No less a country music personage than “guitar man” Chet Atkins credited Skaggs with, “saving country music.” Topping it all off, Ricky Skaggs has the distinct honor of being the youngest person ever inducted into the Grand Ole Opry Hall of Fame. That was back in 1982. He was just twenty-eight years-old.

Now that I’ve got your attention, I’d like to sketch a little scenario for you. Imagine that you have the chance to see a master musician live, and that the venue is close to home. Conjure up a mental picture of you, sitting in a gorgeous, restored music hall, indulging in the adult bevvie of your choice and listening to the kind of stringsmanship you’d expect to hear on the road to heaven. Nice dream, right?

When I was in college, one of our favorite things to do was pile into a car and head for a Grateful Dead show. After returning to school following one concert, a friend who was curious about the huge Dead following asked me about the show.

"Is the music really that good?", she said.

"Well, yeah", I answered, a little thrown by her question. I mean, I loved the music, but I tried to explain to her that a Dead show was so much more than great music. Each show was one stop of an endless tour, a gathering of kindred spirits and a celebration of life. For Deadheads a show was a reunion, a chance to dance, share stories, food, love, laughter and hallucinogens.

The music was the center, the heart and the catalyst for an amazing bond that brought people together for a few hours, and a bond that sometimes lasted for years and years.

Many years later that bond came to mind when I met my first Poconut. The Poconuts, as you probably have guessed, are followers of Poco. The Poconuts were here for the first Poco Infinity concert. These folks were here for the music, but there was something more than just the music bringing them together. They had a bond between them that became apparent as I watched them gather before the show. They shared tales of recent concerts- many had traveled from as far away as California, Florida, Canada- and were planning on following Poco to their next gig in North Carolina. They were clutching photos and souvenirs that had made the journey across three decades and many miles.

Tim Turner & Poconut Family

There is a powerful camaraderie among the Poconuts, like one giant family. They have true affection for the band members and for Mary, Rusty Young's wife, who they call their Den Mother. Mary is a beautiful woman with a beautiful spirit. You will meet her if you come to the concert this Saturday. She will be behind the merchandise table. You will certainly meet some Poconuts.

Best of all you will hear Poco, one of the best bands I know playing an acoustic set in one of the best music halls in the country.

Mountain Heart

In other places in the world, they say we’reego-centric here in the US of A…that we’re all about us. Well, I resemble thatremark….to an astonishing degree when it comes to homegrown talent. Ego aside,it’s not a stretch to say that we cogitate, create and innovate and when itcomes to our music.

Take Mountain Heart, for example. When wasthe last time you heard of a band that mixed bluegrass, rock, jazz and blues?And did it successfully? Joyfully? Acoustically?

Come again???

I kid younot. Mountain Heart is an amazing blend of talent: six young (okay, one is30-ish but the rest are in their 20’s) guys who have turned traditionalbluegrass on its venerable head. Like all bluegrass acts, Jim Van Cleve, BarryAbernathy, Josh Shilling, Aaron Ramsey, Jason Moore and newcomer Seth Taylor eschewelectric and go all out for acoustic.

But a lot oftheir music comes from someplace else entirely – like “Whipping Post.” That oldAllman Brothers classic is the quintessential electric experience. Just pictureit: Duane with his hair flying, riffspinging off the rafters…it was guitar heaven. Now refocus: six guys, fingersflying over the fret boards, music spilling into your sound space, noamps….Awesome. It’s awesome. It’s too awesome to explain here. You just gottahear it for yourself.

There are noamateurs in Mountain Heart. They’ve been nominated for more awards that anyband has a right to expect. According to the band’s founder, awards are notwhat they care about. “We started Mountain Heart to be creative and have roomto grow,” says Van Cleve about the whys and wherefores of their musicalchoices. “I like stuff where everyone has a lot of room to stretch out.”

And stretchout they do. And so can you…at Infinity Music Hall and Bistro. Mountain Heart’smonster musicians will pick their way into your proud American heart on Fridaynight, January 6 at 8:00 pm. Be there. It’s good to be proud.

If you’ve been to Infinity Hall you probably know that this building was built a long time ago, 129 years to be precise. But did you know why it was built? It was built as a community center. In fact it is the oldest multi- purpose community center in the country. The community is still very important to us here, and that commitment to the community is one of the reasons I love being a part of Infinity Hall.

What better way to celebrate the community than putting our own sound man and local musician Fred Schane up on the stage for a night? And in keeping with that community spirit the ticket prices are so low that anyone can afford to buy a ticket. Ten bucks. The best bargain in Connecticut. For ten bucks you can come in, grab a drink and listen to Fred who will make you laugh and make you cry. He will. I guarantee it. Well, maybe I can't guarantee it, but if you listen to his songs about lost love and heartbreak or about riding in the car with his dog Mary and you don't get a tear in your eye, you're a tougher person than I am. And if you can sit through Fred's Rasta man tune without cracking a smile, well, your funny bone just might be broken.

Supporting the community has always been important to Fred, and so he wanted to find a way to use his show to raise some money for the Norfolk emergency services. So here’s what we are going to do. We are going to take this cool poster that I made for Fred’s show and make a small edition of the poster that will be for sale after the show. Five bucks. Probably the second best bargain in Connecticut. All of the proceeds are going to go the Norfolk Ambulance. Fred will even sign it, increasing the value by at least three or four dollars.

One of my favorite things about the end of the year is the advent the "Best of " lists. I love pouring over them, finding the best books, music and films of the past year. I'd like to share some of my own lists with you, starting with the best books of the year by Infinity Hall performers.

1) COMPOSED

A Memoir By Rosanne Cash

245 pages. Viking. $26.95.

We have been honored to host Rosanne Cash twice at Infinity Hall. On the last visit she sang many of the songs from her new album “The List”. In her new memoir she discusses the genesis and recording of that wonderful record. Composed is a personal, engaging account of her life through her troubled childhood, tight relationship with her father and turbulent marriage to Rodney Crowell. The final chapters of the book detail her 2007 brain surgery and recovery. Matt Bjorke writing in Roughstock says:

" ‘Composed’ is much, much more than a chronological look into Rosanne Cash’s life. It’s like reading entries in a journal that has no concept of time and space. Each chapter is a vivid glimps into parts of Rosanne’s life and the look into her psyche during her grieving periods around her father and mother’s death’s brings up strong emotions."

2) CHINABERRY SIDEWALKS

By Rodney Crowell

Rodney gave a remarkable performance at Infinity Hall last spring, interspersing readings from this book with his songs.

The great singer-songwriter takes the reader on a walk through his often-chaotic childhood upbringing in a thoroughly working class neighborhood in Houston in the 1950s. It's gritty and sometimes unsettling but gripping and ultimately uplifting.

The New York Time's Janet Maslin writes:

“Chinaberry Sidewalks” is focused on his parents’ marriage and his own early years. Given the turbulent nature of this subject matter, Mr. Crowell’s tone is folksy but complicated. On the one hand, he is full of wild tales about the Crowell family’s knock-down, drag-out version of domestic bliss: the book opens with a drunken 1955 New Year’s Eve party at which 5-year-old Rodney headed off real trouble by firing his father’s rifle. On the other, his parents clearly did each other real harm and left their son with a lasting residue of anger.

4) Paper Angels

Jimmy Wayne played Infinity our first year and gave a performance I'll never forget. Jimmy was an orphan himself and lived on the street as a child. His songs conveyed the struggles and pain that he lived through as a youth. The book tells a fictional story based on Wayne’s childhood as a recipient of the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program, which takes place during the holidays to give underprivileged kids a Christmas to remember.

Travis Thrasher, writing for the blog Reading Room:

Pick up this book and pick up a copy for a friend or loved one as we - it's beautifully written, it reads fast and you will enjoy the back and forth between stories. Plus while getting to know these two families, I'm pretty sure you will see some of your self in at least one of the characters if not more. I see a lot of myself in both Kevin and Lynn, two completely different characters (though I am not an abused wife, or male for that matter). But the characters are easy to relate to and that is what I think is important. And while the lessons are numerous and have the Christian bend to them, they are not preachy, they teach the loving side of God, through letting God take over your worry, to forgiveness. It is all very well put together in a beautiful story for the Christmas season.

5) Rockin' the Bronx

O.K., I'm cheating by a few months here, this book was published last year). Larry is the front man for the band Black 47, who put on an incredible performance this past February and will be returning next year, on March 1st. His novel Rockin' the Bronx is the story of an Irishman whose girlfriend has moved to the Bronx and his struggle to win her back and bring her back home.

Greg Muller, writing for the blog Greenman Review says:

"Pour yourself a cold one; put on a few old Horslips albums -- not the mythic ones, the edgy ones about Irishmen sailing to America; steel yourself to endure some self-pity time with an emigrant version of Holden Caulfield who 's had a few too many himself . . . and you're ready to settle down to Rockin' the Bronx. The soundtrack helps the book go down the smoother, and for sure the good beer won't hurt."

Let’s see…we’re counting down to 2012 and the world hasn’t gone up in smoke yet. And to honor the fact that you’re still alive and kickin’, what do you think you should do?

You should party, of course! I can’t think of a better way to ring it all in than with great friends, great food, great music and a great big glass of the fizzy stuff at just the right moment.

Speaking of music, how does a night of hot rock and cool jazz sound? Connecticut’s own Jeff Pevar, Mr. Hot Guitar himself, will be the man of the midnight hour at Infinity Music Hall’s New Year’s Eve bash and cool, cool Pamela Means will supply the jazz quotient while you dine in unobstructed majesty. It’s an inspired combination; you get to ramp it up with the amazing Ms. Means and then slam it into overdrive with one of the country’s best touring guitarists.

Jeff “Peev” Pevar is a playing, producing, composing, recording and touring phenomenon. This is a guy who’s played onstage, non-stop, from the age of fifteen and has been associated with the crème de la crème of rock and roll royalty for decades. Ray Charles, B.B. King, Wilson Pickett, Joe Cocker, Kenny Loggins, Jefferson Starship, Laura Nyro, Jimmy Webb and Neil Young are only some of the world famous musicians and performers Peev has toured and recorded with – and then there’s David Crosby.

The legendary founder of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young says of Peev, “The way a guy plays guitar is a combination of dexterity and taste and inventiveness and passion. Peev has all of those things. Pretty much any style he's playing -- the blues, rock 'n' roll, edge-of-jazz kind of stuff, he's there.” Sweet.

Also performing with Jeff is Jonny Rosch (Blues Brothers), Shawn Pelton (Bruce Springsteen), Morris Pleasure, Danny Kortchmar, Frank Gravis and Fred Vigdor (Average White Band).

A few words about Pamela Means…she has a voice like a smoky cross between Sarah Vaughn and Macy Gray, and she plays guitar with the subtlety of a quiet jackhammer. Known for her dedication to social justice, Means is a powerhouse who has more and more to give. Expect future greatness – she’s well on her way.

Absolutely everyone over a certain…ahem…age remembers Loggins and Messina. I am over that certain…ahem… age and if I close my eyes, I can picture my 21-year-old self on a gorgeous winter afternoon, basking in the Arizona sun, breathing in the scent of orange blossoms and listening to “Danny’s Song.” The album was called “Sittin’ In” and cuts from that disc were on every radio station in the country, every five minutes of every single day. Back when the only way you could hear a new release before you bought it was on the radio…

Well, the man behind a lot of the magic was Jim Messina and those of us fortunate enough to live within driving distance of Infinity Music Hall have a rare opportunity to see a true legend perform live. I recently saw a PBS program on Loggins and Messina and, trust me, the magic is still as potent as it was in 1972. Messina has aged well – really, really well. His voice is as smooth and liquid as water under the hull of a big, white sailboat somewhere near Hawaii. Hmmm…Messina, sailboat…rings a bell….As I was saying, it’s all still good.

Unlike so many musicians from way back when, Messina has been involved in all phases of the biz from day one. A guitar player from the age of five, he also writes, sings, plays other instruments and produces great stuff. Produces? You bet. Wrap your head around this: Messina has produced stellar albums for the likes of Buffalo Springfield, Lee Michaels and The Doors. He was a founding member of the first band to make country rock popular, Poco. There’s so much “there” there, I could go on for hours.

The truth is, talent like Jim Messina’s is a gift and, if you get the chance, you should enjoy it. Revel in it. Dance right into the music hall and sing along to your heart’s content. Chances like this don’t come along every day. I’ll be sitting somewhere near you, humming “Danny’s Song.”

Yeah.

Hi all,

Well, it’s December 1st – seems like the kick off date for holiday events. Music, of course, is a must, and I have a great suggestion for a perfect evening of good food and beautiful music.

On December 22nd, Concora Chorale presents “Christmas Through The Ages” at Infinity Hall in the lovely New England Village of Norfolk, just 8 miles west of Winsted on rte 44. A friend recommended this particular event as being one of the best Christmas concerts she’d ever attended. I will be taking my 92 yr old mother to the show.

I’ve got a confession to make: I’m a sucker for any and all American forms of music. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy great music no matter where it originates. But for me, American music is a homegrown groove, hitting all the right notes whether it’s jazz, bluegrass, funk, rock, dance, folk, hip-hop…well, you get the picture. So when I heard that Keller Williams was coming to town, my little provincial heart skipped a beat. Why, you ask? Because Keller Williams digs it all, that’s why. And he plays it all – mixes it together like peanut butter and jelly. The result is an American sound like no other.

Are you a Dead Head? Me, too. So is Keller. He played as a member of the Rhythm Devils with Grateful Dead drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart at the Gathering of the Vibes festival just last year. Do you like Bela Fleck? Guess what, Keller does, too! Calls the man a “major influence.” I could go on but the best thing for you to do is get off the couch, or the interstate, or the joystick, and check the man out.

There’s a long, long history in this country of musical prodigies walking out of the Blue Ridge Mountain states with a stringed instrument in hand and wowing the masses. These people play music like most people talk -- easily because they know the language. Virginian Keller Williams can hold his own with any of them; his solo acoustic guitar flights are legendary. But there’s more…

An admitted music junkie, Keller is also a sly prankster, penning tunes that are funny, off-beat, articulate and self-deprecating. And he does covers – lots of them. Surprised? Don’t be. Ole’ Keller plays 120 shows each and every year, so he does covers. In fact, he’s famous for them. In fact, they are sooo good. Some of his more notorious covers include “Rehab” (yup, Amy Winehouse), Kris Kristofferson’s “Don’t Cuss That Fiddle” and “Mountains of the Moon” by none other than the Grateful Dead. Anything Keller touches instantly becomes his own and there are more than 15 albums showcasing his musical point-of-view floating around out there in the Billboard universe.

Saturday night’s performance of Acoustic Alchemy at InfinityMusic Hall brought the definition acoustic and alchemy to life. When you takethe science of sound and mix it up with finely tuned instruments and skilledmusicians, the chemistry between them is converted into music that takes you toa place wanting more.

It’s one thing to watch and listen to musicians play, butwith Acoustic Alchemy there is no separation of musician and instrument, theybecome one entity. If you stay present while listening, you’ll witness howconnected the players are to their guitars, drums, keyboards, and in returnthose instruments reward us with a sound that we crave more of, similar toeating Chinese food…..a half hour later we’re hungry for more.

So, thank you Acoustic Alchemy for nourishing my heart andsoul and filling me up, but leaving me wanting more……..until the next time youreturn to Infinity!

Pure Prairie League concert review!

As noted yesteday, I was a fan of country-rock band Pure Prairie League during its early recording years (1972-1977). Of the six albums recorded then, the latter four comprised the same six core musicians.

A leaner, four-piece PPL took the Infinity stage last night, including two members from the '70s, and created a nice, full sound.

Bass-player Mike Reilly, who first joined the band after the second album, “Bustin' Out,” noted how long it had been since their last Infinity Hall appearance, the difference this time being the presence of original pedal steel guitar player John David Call, who got a nice welcome from the crowd. "He performed here with Mark Twain," Reilly kidded.

Relative newcomers Rick Schell (1998) on drums and Donnie Lee Clark (2006) on electric and acoustic guitars rounded out the quartet. With more than half of last night's repertoire coming from PPL's first three albums, Schell and Clark proved more than up to the task of helping to recreate the band's vintage sound. Both accomplished instrumentalists, they also alternated with Reilly on lead vocals and created beautiful harmonies. Overall, the chemistry seemed good, onstage and off.

The four played 21 songs over two hours. They closed with the hit single "Amie," then came back for a three-song encore.

After the show, patrons lined up at the Infinity box office to buy copies of the band's 2005 CD, "All In Good Time," as well as PPL t-shirts and caps, with 25% of the proceeds going to a charity benefitting autism. The musicians affably conversed with fans, posed for pictures, and signed autographs, including covers of old LPs. "We'll sign whatever you got," said Reilly, smiling.

Asked at one point if he still plays the banjo, Call looked at bandmate Clark. "Yeah, at his house," he said jokingly. Then he shook his head. "No, it's been too long."

One patron congratulated Schell and Clark for blending in so well. Schell got animated: "We did 'Amie' when I played in a band in junior high!"

The practice has paid off.

Ten-thirty. Time to go home. Thanks, guys, for a fun evening.

Pure Prairie League

Tonight at 8PM!

I became a fan of Pure Prairie League through my older brother, who turned me onto their self-titled debut album in 1972. The opening chords of the first song, "Tears," introduced me to a sound unlike any I had in my growing rock music collection. And once I heard the pedal steel guitar of John David Call, I was hooked.

Mention PPL and most people will say something like, "oh, yeah, Amie" -- a rare popular single for the group, off their second LP, "Bustin' Out."

I was excited to see their third album, "Two Lane Highway," after a three-year drought, and I liked the new lineup (two guitars, bass, pedal steel, drums, and keyboards), despite the absence of founding member Craig Fuller.

I enjoyed them so much I "reviewed" two of their releases ("Live! Takin' the Stage" and "Dance") for my college newspaper at the University of Hartford. They played a concert there my senior year -- the very day I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled. I didn't go.

By 1978 John Call, who also occasionally played banjo and dobro had left the band, and, even though I bought their next two or three releases, I didn't like the sound as well. So I stopped paying attention. But Mr. Call is gonna be there Thursday night, with longtime bassist/frontman Mike Reilly ("Mighty fine!").

Rocket man, you say? What? You’ve never seen Peter Wolf live? Well, what are you waiting for?

There are always, always, those few musicians who are worth whatever hassles you’ve got to endure to see them live. Peter Wolf is one. There’s the music part; he’s been around and around and around and just keeps getting better. Rhythm and blues, hip hop, rock, jazz, the man works all of it. Believe it or not, the J. Geils Band was just the launch pad for an incredible musical career. And then there’s the energy…Wolf is an extreme showman who takes each and every show to the max and I mean the absolute MAX. There’s a great band of merrymakers scheduled as the opener for the show, of course. For their first effort, the group has been rewarded with a nomination for the Best Album of 2011 by the kind folks at the Boston Music Awards. Not too shabby. There are so many exceptional musical hybrids out there—and SeanMcCann’s sound is one of them. It combines the best of bluegrass, folk andcountry on a new album entitled Son of aSailor. The result? An upbeat and alluring mixture of traditionalrhythms and instruments with a modern flair that makes his band The Committedvery listenable.

The Committed consists of fellow countrymen (all hail fromNewfoundland): Sean McCann on vocals, guitar and bodhran (he describes it as “anancient Irish drum fashioned from the hide of a goat and beaten with a stick”);Kelly Russell on concertina, fiddle and tinwhistle; and Craig Young on acoustic/slideguitar, mandolin, and background vocals. Sean says that Kelly and Craig are the most talented players in Newfoundland—no faintpraise in a country that still honors the warmth and coziness of pub culture,and the talented musicians who play in them.

The band’s name has two meanings: he wantsthat sense of commitment some musicians make to music (“I have no Plan B”), butalso acknowledges that in this economy and with the state of the musicindustry, starting a new band might involve the other meaning: insane.

McCann calls his band’s sound “traditional Newfoundland music meets old-time Nashville” and cites a couple of his inspirations: Johnny Cash and KrisKristofferson. Why? Sean says he admirestheir character songs—the person in the song tells a story that imparts somemessage to us—or just unwraps the different ways we all experience life.

Don’t call him or his band “Newfies”; hewants us to know this term has negative connotations despite its cuteness. He is well informed and proud of his Newfoundland roots (he lives with his family in St. John’s)—much of it owed to the Irish and Scottish whocame to use Newfoundlandas a base for cod fishing long, long ago. They brought their music, too—and this indy band honors that musicallegacy, he says, while adding the “twangy guitar runs” of the original Nashville sound.

When asked what The Committed will bring to Infinity, he says he and his talented band mates will combine the “crazy”staccato Newfoundlandjigs and reels together with flat-top picking and slide guitar. He can’t waitto play Infinity again; he says “it’s a great room with great sound” and thathe’s bringing “the big guns”—the expertise of Russell and Young. Sean’s been in the business for 25 years, andalong with his seasoned fellow musicians he wants to bring new life to somesongs grounded in very old traditions.

Sean’s past lives include 18 years in Great Big Sea, a popular Celticrock band that took original tunes the group created and added thetime-spanning sounds of traditional instruments.
